Get out of the box, Get real! Be YOU!

5–6 years back I had this fantastic opportunity to be with a group of exuberant people of different places of the world at CapoeirAsia.

Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art, and the way it is played has always intrigued me.

It is high intensity and full of energy, and so was this place with all those people around me. Now I have always believed I am a person who likes every thing slow; who moves slowly, does things at a measured pace.

CapoeirAsia put me off my balance, and I started to question my visit.

Reflecting on what was bothering me made me realize that over a period of time I had put myself into a box.

A Therapist Box.

I started expecting myself to behave in a particular manner because that is how a therapist is supposed to be. I had been projecting an image on to myself that I had created in my head.

Was I really that person? No!

That is not true me! It is also not very freeing to be who I created myself to be.

The true me is very inquisitive, full of energy, experimentative and high on life. Music, dance, art, people excite me as does high-intensity stuff. So I decided to explore my options to get back to the real me.

As I started to explore those options it gave me a glimpse of who I could be. Oh Boy! That kind of libreation scared the shit out of me. I went back to my hole.

I sat there for few years before I mustered the courage to step out and embrace it. I am now taking baby steps so that it doesn’t get too scary.

I am creating the comfort in that movement before I jump all in. It will take time but I am getting comfortable with the idea of that person I visualised. I will get there slowly but surely.

Have you put yourself in a box?
